Virginia Has Three Top-Five Finishers at the Princeton Chase

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia rowing team competed at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., on Sunday. The Cavaliers had five crews compete in the Varsity Eight event and finished second, fourth, fifth, 16th and 27th.

Additionally, UVa’s Novice Eight won its race at the regatta.

“Princeton beat us last week at the Head of the Charles and they did it again this week and did a nice job,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “But we were pretty pleased to finish second, fourth and fifth with our top three boats.”

Princeton’s ‘A’ Varsity Eight won the three-mile race with a time of 14:22.518. The Cavaliers’ ‘A’ Varsity Eight had the second-fastest time of the day (14:32.112), followed by Dartmouth ‘A’ (14:57.767), Virginia ‘B’ (15:01.312) and Virginia ‘C’ (15:09.109).

Virginia ‘D’ Varsity Eight’s 16th-place time was 15:45.750 and the Cavaliers’ ‘E’ Varsity Eight’s 27th-place time was 16:08.568.

There were 45 entries into the Varsity Eight race.

In the Novice Eight, Virginia’s time of 15:17.653 defeated its nearest competitor by nearly a minute (Penn ‘A’, 16:08.159). Third-place went to Columbia ‘A’ with a time of 16:49.368. There were 15 entries in the Novice Eight race.

“It was fun to see the first years double up and win the Novice Eight race,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “It was exciting for them to work together as a class and we’re looking forward to seeing the continued development of our squad.”

Virginia concludes its fall competition with the Rivanna Romp, held on the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, Va., on Nov. 14. Races begin at 9 a.m.
