CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The second annual Mustache Madness movement kicks off this week nationwide after a successful inaugural campaign that raised nearly $32,000 for prostate cancer awareness and research last November.

Mixing it up in 2010, this year’s event is raising money for the HEADstrong Foundation, an organization that is committed to finding a cure for all blood cancers. The foundation generates funds for cancer research, distributes grants and assistance to survivors of blood cancer, provides financial assistance to families who are experiencing the hardships of having a sick family and providing scholarships and grants for students with ambitions of entering the medical field.

“Mustache Madness is a simple and fun way for the lacrosse nation to rally behind a great cause,” said founder Ken Clausen. “Mustache Madness hopes to embody the camaraderie that the lacrosse community is known for. In 2009, Men’s Lacrosse Mustache Madness raised just under $32,000 with the help of 17 teams. In 2010, Mustache Madness already has over 40 teams registered and is hoping to double what the event raised in its first year. This year Mustache Madness has partnered with both Warrior and Inside Lacrosse and 100 percent of Mustache Madness’s proceeds will be going to a great foundation – HEADstrong Foundation.”

The event runs from November 1 until midnight on November 30 and participants are encouraged to celebrate the mustache by not shaving their upper lip for the entire month. Pictures can be submitted at the official website at www.stashmadness.org for consideration for the award given to the best-styled mustache. Matt DaSilva, assistant editor of Lacrosse Magazine, won the inaugural award for best mustache in 2009.

The other award given is a team award. The team that has the highest fundraising fans wins the coveted Mad Stache Trophy. Fans of Virginia Lacrosse won the inaugural Mad Stache Trophy by raising a third of the final fundraising total.

Anyone can donate to the cause. Last year, the students of Mortimer Sutherland Elementary School presented Clausen and Mustache Madness a check for $1,322. This is what they had raised for the cause, literally one dollar at a time.

“All in all, Men’s Lacrosse Mustache Madness was created with the thought that the lacrosse world is such a tight knit community, giving us all an opportunity to unite together in a worthwhile cause,” said Clausen. “Mustache Madness allows teams from all skill and age ranges to participate and compete in an event for the betterment of mankind.”

Clausen founded the event during his senior season at Virginia. His efforts in founding the event led him to be a finalist and runner-up for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the tightest race ever. The Downington, Pa., native went won a variety of honors in 2010 while helping UVa to the ACC title and an NCAA semifinal appearance. Earning a program first by being named to the USILA All-America first team three times, Clausen also was awarded the Schmeisser Cup as the nation’s top defenseman and was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy.

Clausen was a first round draft pick of Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws in the 2010 MLL Draft. The Colorado Mammoth of the indoor National Lacrosse League also selected him.
