RALEIGH, N.C. – Wolfpack midfielder Akil DeFreitas scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the NC State men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Virginia Saturday night (Nov. 6) in Raleigh, N.C. The Cavaliers concluded their regular season with a 10-4-3 overall record and 2-4-2 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

NC State’s record went to 9-7-2 overall and 1-5-2 in ACC play. The Wolfpack victory snapped a four-match UVa win streak in the series.

Seedings and match times for the 2010 ACC Tournament, being held Nov. 10-14 in Cary, N.C., will be announced Sunday, Nov. 7.

NC State took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when DeFreitas hit a low cross into the penalty box from the right side of the field. Wolfpack forward Craig Sutherland one-touched the ball to the near post for his fourth goal of the season. For DeFreitas, it was his third assist of the year.

The Wolfpack added an insurance goal in the 48th minute. DeFreitas’ goal, his fourth of the year, was assisted by Michael Smith and put the Wolfpack up, 2-0.

NC State out-shot Virginia, 11-7, and the teams had three corner kicks apiece.

In goal for Virginia, senior goalkeeper Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had seven saves, including two from point-blank range in the waning minutes of the match.

Wolfpack goalkeeper Carlos Villa had two saves in the shutout.

The Cavaliers had two shots on goal, one from junior forward Brian Ownby (Glen Allen, Va.) and one by junior midfielder Jimmy Simpson (Warrenton, Va.).
