CHARLOTTESVILLE — Virginia senior Michael Shabaz reached the singles final of the 2010 Virginia National Bank Tennis Championship on Saturday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. He topped Chris Guccione of Australia 7-6, 6-3 in the semifinals to reach the final of the ATP Challenger Tour event.

Shabaz becomes the first active collegiate player to make a Challenger Tour final in at least a decade.

He will play world No. 149 Robert Kendrick in Sunday’s final, beginning at 1 p.m. Shabaz has already beaten three players in the tournament ranked in the world top 225.

Two of Shabaz’s teammates concluded play at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Saturday in New York. Sanam Singh topped Sven Vloedgraven of Binghamton in the consolation quarterfinals, but fell in the semifinals to Eric Quigley of Kentucky. Drew Courntey dropped a three-set match in the consolation quarterfinals to Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith.
