No. 21 Cavaliers Drop Two of Three Matches at Northeast Duals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 21 Virginia wrestling team scored a win over Columbia (30-3) and dropped matches against No. 11 Lehigh (36-7) and No. 14 Pittsburgh (21-15) Saturday at the Journeymen Northeast Duals. The matches were contested at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y.
Matt Snyder (R-So., Lewistown, Pa.) and second-ranked Chris Henrich (Sr., Lansdale, Pa.) each swept their three matches Saturday at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively, for Virginia (7-2). Henrich continued his pursuit of the all-time wins record at Virginia. In improving to 9-0 this season, Henrich upped his career win total to 110 and needs six victories to match the UVa career wins record, held by Mike Krafchick.
Virginia opened the day by winning nine of 10 individual bouts in cruising to a 30-3 victory over Columbia. Seven of the Cavaliers’ wins came by decision, with Henrich and heavyweight Jack Danilkowicz (R-Sr., Green Oaks, Ill.) each picking up major decisions.
The Cavaliers ran into a buzzsaw in the second match of the day, as the Mountain Hawks used a trio of pins and a UVa forfeit at 197 to load up on bonus points and roll to the big win. Lehigh won eight of 10 bouts, with Snyder and Henrich scoring the Cavaliers’ lone wins. Snyder posted a major decision against Mitch Berger, while Henrich earned 9-4 decision against 16th-ranked Austin Meys.
In the final match of the day, Virginia and Pittsburgh battled back and forth throughout. Each team won five individual matches, but the Panthers scored bonus points at 141 pounds and heavyweight on pins. At 141 third-ranked Tyler Nauman pinned freshman Gus Sako (Cleveland, Ohio), who was filling in for 14th-ranked Nick Nelson (R-Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), who sat out with an injury. At heavyweight, No. 8 Ryan Tomei pinned Danilkowicz.
UVa held a 15-12 lead through eight bouts, but Pitt was victorious at 197 and heavyweight as Zac Thomusselt and eighth-ranked Ryan Tomei each won by decision to secure the team victory. The Cavaliers started the match strong as Snyder scored a 6-4 sudden-victory win over No. 20 Anthony Zanetti. Henrich also posted a win over a ranked foe, downing No. 17 Ethan Headlee, 5-2.
The Cavaliers now are off from dual competition until Dec. 18 when they travel to Campbell.
