CHARLOTTESVILLE-The Virginia men’s basketball team is back in action on Monday (Dec. 20) when the Cavaliers host Norfolk State at John Paul Jones Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and is the third of eight consecutive home games for UVa.

Reserved tickets for the Virginia-Norfolk State game are available for $13 and $28. Tickets can be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com/tickets and can also be purchased on game day at the JPJA box office starting at 5:30 p.m.

Monday’s game will be broadcast on the Virginia Sports Radio Network, including 3WV-FM (97.5) in the Charlottesville area. The Virginia women’s basketball team’s game at James Madison University on Monday will be broadcast on WINA-AM (1070).

Virginia will be looking for its fifth consecutive win on Monday. The Cavaliers have won their last four games and five of their last six.

UVa is coming off a 63-48 victory over Oregon on Friday (Dec. 17). The Cavaliers have now won all four of their home games this season.

Freshman guard KT Harrell scored 20 points, senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan had 17 points and red-shirt junior guard Sammy Zeglinski added 12 points and four assists to lead Virginia to its victory over Oregon.

Senior forward Mike Scott, the Cavaliers’ leading scorer (16.3 ppg.) and rebounder (10.4 rpg.), did not play in the game against Oregon after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle Thursday (Dec. 16). The surgery was to remove loose pieces of cartilage.

UVa also played without injured senior forward Will Sherrill for the third consecutive game.

Virginia got a lift from freshman forward Akil Mitchell who led the team with seven rebounds against Oregon and also had two points. Freshman guard Joe Harris added six rebounds and five points.

In addition to Scott, Farrakhan (11.2 ppg.) and Harris (11.1 ppg.) are also averaging in double figures in scoring for UVa. Harrell is averaging 9.2 points a game.

Sophomore guard Jontel Evans leads the Cavaliers in assists with 39, an average of 3.9 a game.

Virginia has held its last two opponents to under 50 points. The Cavaliers defeated Radford 54-44 on Dec. 7 before the victory over Oregon.

Monday’s game with Norfolk State is the first between the two schools. The Spartans enter the game with an overall record of 1-7 and a 0-1 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Norfolk State is coming off a 74-54 loss at Maine on Dec. 12.

Senior guard/forward Rob Hampton leads the Spartans in scoring with an average of 15.8 points a game. Junior forward Kyle O’Quinn is averaging 15.4 points and a team-leading 11.8 rebounds a game. Senior guard Aleek Pauline leads Norfolk State in assists with 31 (3.9 apg.) and is averaging 8.4 points a game.

Anthony Evans is in his fourth season as the head coach at Norfolk State. The Spartans were 11-19 overall last season and finished fourth in the MEAC with a conference record of 9-7.

After the game with Norfolk State, Virginia returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 22) against Seattle at John Paul Jones Arena. That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
