CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team announced its captains for the 2011 season. Seniors Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) will lead the program this season.

“Michael and Sanam have not only improved as tennis players, but they have also developed into tremendous leaders,” said head coach Brian Boland. “I am really proud of Michael and Sanam for their devotion and commitment to making everyone around them better each day. I have no doubt they are going to continue to be tremendous leaders for our team this spring season. Both are preparing to enter professional tennis upon their graduation this spring and I know they will continue to be great examples for our players each day. They care deeply about Virginia tennis and have the overwhelming support and respect from the players on the team.”

Shabaz is a two-time NCAA doubles champion and a three-time All-American. He is currently ranked No. 27 nationally in singles and No. 3 in doubles with Drew Courtney. Singh is a two-time All-American and is currently ranked No. 10 nationally in singles.

The Cavaliers open the 2011 season on Jan. 18 as they host William & Mary at 6 p.m. at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
