HAMPTON, Va.
– Chris Henrich (Sr., Lansdale, Pa.) set the Virginia career wins record Friday as the Virginia wrestling team split a pair of matches at the Virginia Duals, held at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. Henrich won both of his matches Friday to push his career mark to 117, surpassing Mike Krafchick’s school-record mark of 116 wins, set from 1991-95.

As a team, the Cavaliers dropped their opener, 24-12, to Buffalo before rebounding to capture a 35-3 win over Liberty in the consolation round. The Cavaliers (9-3) return to the Coliseum at 10 a.m. Saturday to wrestle No. 25 Arizona State in an elimination match.

Henrich defeated Buffalo’s Brian Sheehan and Liberty’s Eli Sanchez at 174 pounds Friday and is now 117-17 in his career. Ranked fourth nationally this season, the two-time All-American is 16-1 in 2010-11.

“I’m really proud of this accomplishment,” Henrich said. “Now that I’ve reached this point, I can look back at this milestone and realize that I have been fortunate to be in a good system with great coaches and teammates. This win goes out to my coaches, family and teammates. Now we just need to keep picking up more team wins.”

Matt Snyder (R-So., Lewistown, Pa.) and Jon Fausey (R-Fr., Dalmatia, Pa.) also won both of their matches Friday for Virginia.

Buffalo (7-3) won seven of 10 bouts to pull out the win in the teams’ opener Friday. UVa started strong with a Snyder pin against Sean Walton at 125 pounds. The momentum quickly swung the other way as Virginia surrendered late leads in dropping back-to-back matches at 133 and 141. At 133 Joe Spisak (Fr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) held a third-period lead before giving up a late takedown and near fall to lose 6-3 to Kevin Smith. At 141 Gus Sako (Fr., Cleveland, Ohio) fell victim to a late third-period move by Andrew Schutt which resulted in a fall.

Buffalo won decisions at 149, 157 and 165 before UVa broke the streak with Henrich’s 10-4 win over Brian Sheehan. Fausey followed with an 8-1 decision over Jimmy Hamel at 184 before the Bulls’ Tyler Peter knocked off No. 18 Mike Salopek (R-So., North Huntingdon, Pa.), 4-2, at 197 to clinch the team win.

Virginia rebounded with a dominating win over Liberty (6-5). Snyder scored another early win with a takedown with two seconds left in his match to seal a 5-2 win over Robert Jillard. Spisak then controlled his bout with T.J. Mitchell and racked up over three minutes of riding time in a 9-1 major decision.

Sako followed with a pin against Joey Montgomery at 141, and Derek Valenti (Jr., Newton, N.J.) recorded an 11-2 major decision against Eric Reger. Nicky Gordon (R-Fr., Kingston, Pa.) then posted an 8-3 win over Peter Crawford to give UVa a commanding 20-0 lead.

After a Liberty win at 165, Henrich dominated Sanchez and finished off a 15-0 technical fall early in the second period. Fausey then jumped to a big early lead in racking up a 16-4 major decision against Royal Brettrager to give UVa a 29-3 advantage.

Stephen Doty (So., St. Louis, Mo.), stepping up two weight classes to 197 pounds in place of a banged-up Salopek, blanked Aaron Thompson, 6-0, before Jack Danilkowicz (Sr., Green Oaks, Ill.) scored a takedown in sudden victory time to knock off Josh Pelletier, 3-1, at heavyweight and give Virginia the 35-3 team victory.
