NEW ORLEANS, La. – Sophomore All-American Robby Andrews has been named to the Bowerman 2011 Men’s Preseason Watch List, as announced Wednesday by the Bowerman Men’s Watch Committee and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Andrews, from Englishtown, N.J., was the NCAA Champion in the 800 meters during last year’s indoor season and is one of 10 student-athletes to be named to the watch list for collegiate track and field’s top honor.

In his 2010 freshman campaign as an 800-meter specialist, Andrews was responsible for some of the thrilling moments of the collegiate track and field season. Shortly after winning indoor Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the 800m and as the anchor of the DMR, Andrews was voted the ACC Men’s Indoor Freshman of the Year. He then gained national attention at the NCAA Indoor Championships by using a deadly kick to surge from seventh at the 600-meter split to first, nipping 2010 Bowerman finalist and Oregon Olympian Andrew Wheating for the national indoor crown in the 800-meters by one-hundredth of a second. He finished the indoor season undefeated in the 800m.

Andrews went on to catch Wheating again, this time anchoring UVa to a 4×800-meter victory at the Penn Relays – the Cavaliers’ first Championship of America relay title since 1943 – but Wheating would take the tape to Andrews’ second at the NCAA outdoor meet. For his accomplishments, Andrews was voted both the ACC Performer and Freshman of the Year following the outdoor season and was named the 2009-10 ACC Sportsman of the Year for showing both humility and poise throughout his inaugural season as a Cavalier.

In addition, over the summer, Andrews finished runner-up at the USA Junior National Championships and traveled to Moncton, Canada, to represent Team USA at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships. Andrews came home as one of the first two Americans to medal in a middle distance event at the world junior games, finishing third overall.
