Play Begins at UVa Winter Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened play Saturday at the UVa Winter Invitational, the first event of the 2011 season. The Cavaliers won all four of their doubles matches along with five singles matches during the first day at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers played all of their matches on Saturday against Utah. In doubles, Virginia won in all four flights, highlighted by 10th-ranked Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Hana Tomljaniovic’s (Boca Raton, Fla.) 8-6 win in Flight A over No. 49 Anastasia Putilina and Paige Miles. Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) won in Flight B, 16th-ranked Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Rashmi Teltumbde (Mumbai, India) won in Flight C, and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Marjorie Baker (Washington, D.C.) won in Flight D.

In singles, the Cavaliers won five of nine matches on the day. Hardenbergh was victorious in Flight C, Fuccillo won in Flight E, Peretz won her opener in Flight G, Teltumbde won in Flight G and Baker was victorious in Flight H.

Action continues Sunday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Play begins at 10 a.m. and admission is free.
