PITTSBURGH – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded dual meet victories over Pittsburgh Saturday at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 11th-ranked Cavalier women earned a 161-131 victory over Pitt while the 10th-ranked men defeated the Panthers 159-130.

Freshman Rachel Naurath paced the UVa women with three event victories and swam on the final relay of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, which was exhibitioned.

Naurath began the day with a win in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.94) and followed that performance with a victory in the very next event, the 200 freestyle. She clocked a time of 1:49.14 in that race, leading the way for a 1-2-3 UVa finish. Teammates Meredith Perdue (1:49.89) and Caroline Kenney (1:51.78) followed in second and third, respectively. Naurath’s third individual event win came in the 100 butterfly; she paced the field with a time of 55.72.

The women’s 200 medley relay team began the day with a first-place finish, touching in 1:43.58. Meredith Cavalier, Kelly Flynn, Emily Lloyd and Lauren Perdue swam for UVa.

Flynn went on to win the 200 breaststroke (1:04.44) while Lauren Perdue claimed first-place honors in the 50 free (22.79). Lloyd followed in second with a mark of 23.56.

Liz Shaw led a 1-2 finish for the Cavaliers in the 200 butterfly. She finished with a winning time of 1:59.95 and was followed in second by classmate Katya Bachrouche (2:03.14).

Other event winners for the Orange and Blue included Jenny Lewis in the 100 backstroke (56.96) and Claire Crippen in the 500 freestyle (4:53.02).

Crippen, Anna Dobben, Naurath and Lauren Perdue teamed up to finish first in the 400 freestyle relay (1:34.09). It was the final race of the afternoon and was exhibitioned by Virginia.

Freshman divers Alex Leinroth and Kelly Lloyd both punched tickets to the NCAA Zone diving meet against the Panthers. Leinroth recorded scores of 283.83 on the 3-meter board and 244.80 on the 1-meter board. Lloyd tallied marks of 251.10 on the 3-meter and 274.34 on the 1-meter.

The men were paced by freshman Taylor Grey, who claimed event wins in the 100 breaststroke (56.36) and 200 breaststroke (2:01.91). He also swam as a member of the winning 200 medley relay team, which finished in 1:30.42. Grey was joined by teammates Jack Murfee, Scot Robison and Peter Geissinger on the relay squad.

Senior Matt McLean led a 1-2-3 finish for the Cavalier men in the 1000 freestyle clocking a winning time of 9:12.12. He was followed by Jon Daniec (9:18.54) and John Snawerdt (9:21.11).

David Karasek also led a sweep for Virginia in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:39.51. Taylor Smith (1:39.64) and Bradley Phillips (1:40.04) finished second and third, respectively.

Phillips went on to claim the 500 freestyle in 4:29.19; he was followed by Karasek (4:35.04) and Snawerdt (4:36.43).

Other event winners for the Cavaliers included Robison in the 50 freestyle (20.37) and Tom Barrett in the 100 freestyle (45.62).

Junior diver Briggy Imbriglia picked up NCAA Zone qualifying scores against Pitt, earning a mark of 350.55 on the 3-meter board and 309.30 on the 1-meter board.

The Cavaliers will compete in the final dual meet of the season at NC State next Saturday, Feb. 5.
