CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior tennis player Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Shabaz, who shares this week’s honor with Vahid Mirzadeh of Florida State, helped the top-ranked Cavaliers post 7-0 wins over Maryland and Kentucky last week.

Shabaz went 2-0 at No.1 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last week, as Virginia topped No. 71 Maryland in its ACC opener and No. 12 Kentucky a day later. He didn’t drop a set as he topped No. 36 Maros Horny of Maryland and No. 2 Eric Quigley of Kentucky. In doubles, Shabaz and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) remained unbeaten in 2010-11 and ran their win streak to 17 consecutive matches against collegiate competition, dating back to last year’s NCAA Doubles Championship.

The award is the second of the year for Shabaz, who was also honored on Jan. 25. It marks the fourth time Shabaz has been honored in his career, as he was a two-time ACC Player of the Week last season.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday as they host Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. On Sunday they make their first road trip of the season as they visit Boston College.
