COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams began competition Friday at Maryland’s Terrapin Invitational. The meet will conclude Saturday.

Both Cavalier squads picked up victories in the 200 freestyle relay. Jane Munro, Dana Nessler, Anais Menguy and Anna Dobben claimed first-place honors in 1:33.91. Freddy Crawford, Zach Kohl, David Wren and Serge Gould teamed up to win the event in 1:24.14.

The Virginia men then went 1-2-3 in the 200 individual medley. Nick Montes de Oca won the event in 1:49.24 and was followed by teammates Tommy Inwood (1:51.29) and Cody Brunette (1:51.42).

Hillary Petersen won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.44 and Kelly Grant placed third overall (4:59.99). Jonathon Brurger won the men’s race in 4:31.29.

Meg Hutchinson (2:00.14) and Nathan Vredeveld (1:45.57) both took top honors in the 200 backstroke. Vredeveld was part of a 1-2-3 Virginia finished, as Wren (1:47.28) and Gould (1:48.28) placed second and third, respectively.

Anna Dobben (50.66) picked up a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (50.66) and was followed by Nessler (50.99).

Kohl went onto win the men’s 100 freestyle in a winning time of 45.44. Crawford tied for third in the event with a mark of 46.28. Hart recorded a victory in the 200 butterfly (1:49.41) while Brunette (1:49.91) took second.

The women’s 400 medley relay team of Dobben, Jennings Grant, Hutchinson and Nessler ended day one of the invitational with another relay win. The Cavaliers teamed up to finish in 3:50.00.

The men’s 400 medley relay team of Gould, Montes de Oca, Crawford and Beurger also won the event in 3:22.78.

The final day of the Terrapin Invitational begins with preliminaries at 11 a.m. Saturday. Finals are slated for 6 p.m.
