CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team remained unbeaten on the season as it swept a Saturday doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers defeated No. 55 Marshall 6-1 in the first match of the day and No. 66 Winthrop 7-0 in the second match.

The No. 25 Cavaliers are 6-0 on the season, the best start to a season in school history. The previous best start was 4-0, done four times, most recently in 2006.

“Playing doubleheaders is never easy,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “It is always a challenge playing two solid teams in the same day. I was proud of how our team respected these opponents, had a good mindset in these matches and put forth two good efforts.”

Against Marshall (7-2), the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2 and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Rashmi Teltumbde (Mumbai, India) posted an 8-1 win at No. 3.

In singles, the Cavalier lead was doubled as Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) recorded one of the most impressive wins of her career, a 6-1, 6-1 victory over 27th-ranked Michaela Kissell at the No. 1 spot. Vierra, Fuccillo, Hardenbergh and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) also posted straight set victories against the Thundering Herd.

In the second match of the day, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead over Winthrop (5-6) by sweeping all three doubles matches. The teams of Hardenbergh/Vierra and Fuccillo/Teltumbde won the second matches of the day, while Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) added a win at No. 1.

Virginia won all six singles matches against the Eagles, five in straight sets. Fuccillo, Fraser, Teltumbde, Fraser and Marjorie Baker (Washington, D.C.) won in straight sets, while Vierra won in a third-set superbreaker.

Virginia will return to action next weekend when it hosts the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The event runs Friday-Monday and features 16 of the top teams in the nation. The draw will be announced early next week.
