Kahuku, HI – Junior Ben Kohles won a three-way playoff for medalist honors and the 16th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team posted the best single-round team score in the program’s history to finish third at the 17-team John Burns Intercollegiate in Kahuka, Hawaii. The Cavaliers shot 19-under 269 during Friday’s final round to finish the 54-hole tournament at 18-under 846. California won the tournament at 30-under 834 while Texas A&M was second at 840.

Following the end of regulation play Kohles was tied for first with Texas A&M’s John Hurley and California’s Max Homa. Kohles made a six-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to claim medalist honors.

It marked the fifth time in Kohles’ career he has finished or tied for first place. Earlier this season he won the Gary Koch Intercollegiate. Kohles’ total matches the UVa career record set by Simon Cooke who won five tournaments for the Cavaliers from 1993 to 1996.

Kohles was one of four Cavaliers who shot in the 60s during the final round to better UVa’s previous single-round scoring record of 270 set in 1996 at the Red River Classic in Dallas. Kohles carded a 5-under 67 Friday for a three-day total of 10-under 206. That matched the best tournament score in his career. It was the 13th top-10 finish during his career.

Senior Will Collins posted the Cavaliers’ best score in the final round, shooting a career-best 7-under 65. Freshman Ben Rusch also turned in the best single-round score of his career, shooting 4-under 68. Amory Davis shot 3-under 69 for the team’s final counting score of the day.

Collins moved up to 12th place at 5-under 211. Davis finished 20th at 2-under 214 and Cole Willcox, who shot 73 Friday, was 39th at 220, the best tournament score of his career. Rusch finished 46th at 6-over 222.

During the final round the Cavaliers piled up 23 birdies and one eagle (by Collins) while posting just seven bogies over 90 holes of play.

The Cavaliers return to action March 7 when they travel to Aiken, S.C. for the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate. Kohles took medalist honors at the event last year.
