GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Virginia softball team (6-3) was defeated by Hofstra (6-3) by a score of 2-1 Sunday in the final game of the East Carolina Pirate Classic. The Cavaliers finished the tournament with a record of 3-2.

Virginia was outhit in the contest 7-4. Stephanie Harris, Alex Skinkis, Kennedy Byxbee and Alison Pittman each singled for the Orange and Blue.

Melanie Mitchell threw a complete game for UVa in the circle. She allowed one earned run and struck out six.

The Pride went up 1-0 in the first inning. Rachel Senatore recorded an infield single and stole second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Senatore would score on a Laura Valentino double to right center. The next batter, Olivia Galati, singled to left but Valentino was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Hofstra took a 2-0 lead in the third. Jess Hirschbuhl reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a Tessa Ziemba double to left field.

Virginia got a run back in the bottom of the third. Byxbee and sophomore Kristen Hawkis both walked to begin the stanza. Lauren Didlake came on to pinch run for Hawkins and Pittman followed with a single to load the bases. A Giannina Cipolloni fielder’s choice cut down Byxbee at home, but Taylor William’s grounder to short allowed Didlake to score on the play.

Virginia heads west for play in the prestigious Cathedral City Classic, which starts Thursday in Palm Springs, Calif. The Cavaliers will open the tournament against Brigham Young at 1 p.m. PT.
