CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse team will head to in-state rival Richmond Wednesday for its second of three season opening road contests. The Cavaliers will face the Spiders at 5 p.m., at Robins Stadium. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia opened its season with a 15-8 loss to then-No. 12 Loyola on the road Saturday afternoon. Juniors Charlie Finnigan and Julie Gardner led the attack with two goals and one assist each, while redshirt junior Ainsley Baker tacked on two goals. In cage for the Cavaliers, sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kolarik stopped a career-high 11 shots and earned a personal-best five ground balls.

The Spiders enter the contest also looking for their first win of the season. Richmond has dropped its first three games – all to ACC opponents – and most recently to No. 4 UNC, 14-8. Mary Flowers leads the Spiders this year with nine points on seven goals and two assists, while Sam Stevenson and Danielle Schaevitz both have five goals. In cage, Victoria Roebuck has played all 180 minutes and has stopped 48 shots while posting a 17.33 goals-against average.

In the all-time series between the two programs, Virginia leads 30-3-1 thanks to 21-straight victories between 1984-2005. Richmond used an 8-7 win over the Cavaliers in 2006 to snap the streak, but the Cavaliers have won the last four straight, including a 17-8 win at UVa’s University Hall Turf Field last year.

Following the contest, Virginia will conclude its three-game road swing and head to No. 9 Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 27. Opening draw is slated for 12:30 p.m., in the Carrier Dome.
