Four Cavaliers Named to All-ACC Academic Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Cavaliers have been named to the All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams, as released by the Atlantic Coast Conference Wednesday. Senior Emil Heineking and junior Sean Keveren were named to the men’s team, while senior Stephanie Garcia and sophomore Barbara Strehler were honored on the women’s side.
Garcia is making her fourth-straight appearance on the women’s all-academic team. An English major from South Riding, Va., Garcia earned a 10th-place finish at regionals this fall to become the second Cavalier in program history to earn four All-Southeast Region honors. She also finished ninth at ACCs to earn her second all-conference accolade and was the Cavaliers’ top finisher at NCAAs, claiming 84th overall. Garcia opened the season with an individual win at the Lou Onesty Invitational, leading the women’s squad to a perfect score at the meet. She was named the ACC Performer of the Week for her accomplishments.
Heineking, an economics major from Chardon, Ohio, is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree. This fall, the program’s only two-time cross country All-American became the ninth conference performer in the league’s 57-year history to win back-to-back ACC Championships. The 2007 ACC Freshman of the Year, Heineking won this season’s individual conference title with a time of 23:40.10 to become the third Cavalier to earn four cross country All-ACC honors. He also became the second Cavalier to collect four all-region honors by finishing fifth at the Southeast Region Championships. Heineking finished his career as one of only two Cavaliers to compete at four NCAA Championships – where he finished 71st overall. He also holds the Panorama Farms course record – a mark of 23:16.19 from 2010.
Keveren is a kinesiology major from Brentwood, Tenn., who is making his first appearance on the all-academic team. Keveren competed in each of the three championship races for the Cavaliers this fall. He scored at ACCs with a 17th-place finish and a time of 24:13.40, before earning a 27th-place finish at regionals in 31:18.8. At the NCAA Championships, Keveren completed the course in 30:57.7 to finish 82nd overall.
Strehler is an English major who is earning her first All-ACC Academic Team nod. A Richmond, Va., native, Strehler led the team at ACCs, finishing eighth in 20:33.1 to collect her first all-conference accolade. She followed that up with an eighth-place finish at regionals in 20:26.5 to earn her first All-Southeast Region honor and help the Cavaliers to the team title. At NCAAs, Strehler completed the course in 21:14.2 to finish 86th overall.
To be eligible for consideration on an All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
