CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team is ranked No. 9 in this week’s ITA rankings, marking the first time in school history the Cavaliers have cracked the top 10. The previous high ranking for the program was No. 17, which came in 1994.

The Cavaliers (8-1) moved up 14 places this week, from No. 23 to No. 9, after a strong showing at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held last weekend at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over No. 3 Baylor, marking the highest ranked opponent the team has ever defeated. After falling 4-2 to No. 6 Duke in the quarterfinals, the Cavaliers closed out the tournament with a 4-0 win over No. 20 Northwestern in a consolation match.

Virginia returns to action this weekend as they compete Friday-Sunday at the 2011 Blue/Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. The Cavaliers are the highest ranked team in the field and are joined by No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 22 Oklahoma, No. 36 Alabama, No. 43 Ohio State, No. 48 DePaul, No. 51 Utah and No. 64 Auburn.
