MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Virginia women’s tennis team travels to Montgomery, Ala., this week for the 2011 Blue Gray Tennis Classic. The Cavaliers are the top seed in the eight-team field, which is the first time a women’s tournament has been held at the historic tournament.

Virginia, which moved up to a program-high No. 9 national ranking this week, will open play No. 48 DePaul on Friday at 11 a.m. On Saturday, the Cavaliers will play either No. 43 Ohio State or No. 64 Auburn. On Sunday, they will play someone from the other half of the draw, which consists of No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 22 Oklahoma, No. 36 Alabama and No. 51 Utah.

The Cavaliers (8-1) are coming off a strong weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia upset No. 3 Baylor in the first round before falling to No. 6 Duke in the quarterfinals. The Cavaliers added a consolation draw win over No. 20 Northwestern to conclude the tournament.

The Blue Gray Tennis Classic has been held in Montgomery every year since 1949. This year marks the first time there has been a women’s tournament in conjunction with the men’s tournament.
