CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia rowing head coach Kevin Sauer has announced that senior Claudia Blandford (Winnipeg, Canada) and juniors Sarah Borchelt (Sterling, Mass.) and Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) have been named captains for the 2011 season.

Blandford was a member of the 2010 Second Varsity Eight that finished fourth in the grand final at the NCAA Championships. That crew also won the South/Central Regional Championship and ACC Championship. Blandford was an All-ACC Academic Rowing Team selection in 2009.

Borchelt was a 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete in 2010 and rowed with the Second Varsity Eight that finished fourth in the grand final at the NCAA Championships. Borchelt was a member of the Second Varsity Eight crew that won the South/Central Regional Championship and the Varsity Four that won the ACC Championship. She was an All-ACC Academic Rowing Team selection in 2010.

Kuzzy rowed with the Varsity Eight that won the silver medal at the 2010 NCAA Championships. That crew was also South/Central Regional Champions, ACC Champions and ACC Crew of the Year. Kuzzy was the 2009 ACC Rookie of the Year.

Virginia captured the 2010 NCAA Rowing Championship and begins its 2011 campaign on March 12 with a scrimmage against Michigan State at Marion, Va. On March 26 (Stanford) and March 27 (California), Virginia will compete in Redwood Shores, Calif.
