New Orleans, LA – The eighth-ranked Virginia women’s golf tied 2010 NCAA Champion Purdue for fifth place at the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans. It was the Cavaliers’ first tournament of the spring season.

UVa shot 2-over 290 during Tuesday’s final round, its best 18-hole score of the tournament, to finish at 16-over 880. Second-ranked USC (868) edged No. 1 ranked Alabama (872) for the team title. Tulane and Duke tied for third at 879.

Every team in the 17-school field was ranked in the current Golfstat top-50 poll including seven of the top 10 teams in the nation.

Virginia was led by the 18th-place finish of senior Joy Kim. She shot 1-under 71 Tuesday during a round that saw her post six birdies and five bogeys. She finished the 54-hole event at 3-over 219. It marked the first time since playing at the NCAA East Regional in 2008 that Kim has led the team in scoring.

Sophomore Britttany Altomare and freshman Portland Rosen tied for 22nd overall at 4-over 220. Altomare carded a 72 for the second consecutive day and Rosen finished with a 74. Calle Nielson shot 73 during the final round to move up to 33rd at 223. Nicole Agnello was 52nd at 228.

Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow took medalist honors at 5-under 211, one shot better than LSU’s Megan McChrystal.

Virginia returns to Louisiana in two weeks to compete in the LSU/Cleveland Classic slated for March 11-13 in Baton Rouge.
