GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia dropped a 74-68 contest to Wake Forest in the first round of the 2011 ACC Tournament Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Rookie guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) was the Cavaliers’ high scorer with 19 points and added five rebounds.

Junior guard Whitny Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) was one point shy of her career-high, scoring 16 points and connecting on three 3-pointers.

With the loss, Virginia’s record went to 16-15 overall. The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 5-9 conference record and were playing as the tournament’s eighth seed. Wake Forest improved to 15-16 overall. The Demon Deacons also finished with a 5-9 conference record and were awarded the ninth seed after a tiebreaker procedure.

Virginia led 32-27 at halftime. Wake Forest erased that deficit by the 16:19 mark when a Brittany Waters jumper tied the score at 37-37.

The final tie of the game was at the 8:06 mark when Edwards drained a 3-pointer to tie the score at 51-51.

From there, Wake Forest went on a 5-0 run to take a 56-51 lead on a lay-up by Waters and eventually built a 10-point cushion, 63-53, with 3:55 to play.

Down the stretch, the Cavaliers never came closer than six points.

Wake Forest managed a 38-12 advantage in points in the paint and a 12-0 advantage in fast break points.

The Demon Deacons were led by Waters’ 21 points.

For UVa, Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
