Virginia Wins 5-2 at LSU in Outdoor Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team returned to action for the first time in over two weeks by opening its outdoor schedule with a 5-2 victory over No. 56 LSU Wednesday afternoon at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium. The Cavaliers improve to 15-0 on the year with the win, while the Tigers fall to 4-7.
In doubles, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) teamed with Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) for the first time and the duo downed Julien Gauthier and Tom Knights 8-2 at No. 3. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) added an 8-2 of their own, topping Stefan Szacinski and Roger Anderson at the No. 2 position. At the top spot, Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) defeated Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski 8-4 to complete the sweep.
In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Knights at No. 6. LSU cut that advantage in half, 2-1, when Gauthier defeated Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Shabaz answered with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top spot, defeating Skupski 6-3, 6-2 to make the score 3-1. Domijan clinched the win with his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Szacinski. Singh added a 7-5, 6-1 win over Mark Bowtell at No. 3 to make the score 5-1 before Carlsson concluded the match with a super-breaker win at No. 4 over Jenkins to make the final score 5-2.
The Cavaliers continue their road trip on Saturday as they visit No. 28 Baylor. Match time in Waco is 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET).
