CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior tennis player Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Shabaz, who shares this week’s honor with Stefan Hardy of North Carolina, helped the top-ranked Cavaliers post road wins at No. 56 LSU and No. 28 Baylor last week.

Shabaz went 2-0 at No.1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles last week. Playing at the top spot in the lineup, the 10th-ranked Shabaz scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 69 Neal Skupski of LSU and defeated Baylor’s No. 22 John Peers 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Shabaz also teamed with Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) for a win at No. 1 doubles in the LSU match before the pair saw their 19-match winning steak snapped against Baylor. Virginia’s win over Baylor was only the ninth home loss for the Bears in the past 10 years.

The award is the third of the year for Shabaz, who was also honored on Jan. 25 and Feb. 8. It marks the fifth time Shabaz has been honored in his career, as he was a two-time ACC Player of the Week last season. It is the fourth honor of the season for the Cavaliers as freshman Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) was named ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 22.

The Cavaliers continue their road trip this week as they visit No. 29 Oklahoma on Friday and No. 3 Texas on Sunday.
