CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (15-15) snapped its six-game losing skid with an 8-4 victory over Georgetown (6-23) Thursday at The Park. Freshman Erica Cipolloni earned the win in the circle for the Orange and Blue.
The Cavaliers outhit Georgetown 12-6 in the contest as four Cavaliers recorded two hits apiece including freshman Stephanie Harris, sophomores Alex Skinkis and Taylor Williams, and junior Alexa Martinez. Harris and Skinkis both contributed two RBI.
Cipolloni earned her fifth win of the season in the complete-game outing. She tallied three strikeouts.
Virginia put up one run in each of the first five innings and capped its scoring with a three-run sixth. The Hoyas scored three times in the fifth and once again in the top of the seventh.
Williams recorded Virginia’s first run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, she singled to left and stole second. She would come in to score on a Harris RBI triple to right.
There were two outs in the second when the Cavalier struck again. Martinez doubled to left center, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Skinkis RBI single to left.
In the third, Harris walked with one out and moved to second after a Hoya error on a fielder’s choice. After a groundout allowed Harris to go to third, she eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Cavaliers went up 4-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Martinez led off the stanza with a single to left and sophomore Lauren Didlake came on to pinch run for her. After a Skinkis bunt single, Didlake scored on a Giannina Cipolloni single up the middle.
Georgetown cut the UVa lead to 5-3 with a trio of runs in the top of the fifth, but the Cavaliers responded in the next inning, with three runs of their own in the sixth. With one out, Pittman beat out an infield single. Williams followed with a singe to right to put runners on first and second. The next hitter, Harris, singled to right that allowed Pittman to score.
