CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (15-17, 0-5 ACC) lost a doubleheader to Maryland 13-0 and 7-0 Saturday at The Park.

The two wins give Maryland a record of 22-9 on the year and a 2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, as it opened the conference season against the Cavaliers.

Maryland outhit Virginia in the five-inning game one 13-2. Freshman Erica Cipolloni tripled in the loss while sister Giannina Cipolloni recorded the other hit, a single.

Junior Stephanie Coates and Erica Cipolloni shared the pitching duties. Coates threw the first three innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits (the other three runs were unearned). She also finished with one strikeout. Cipolloni came on to toss the final two innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Maryland senior Kerry Hickey earned the victory, throwing the complete game shutout. She compiled seven strikeouts.

In the second game, UVa sophomore Kristen Hawkins threw all seven innings in the circle and finished with three strikeouts. Maryland’s Kendra Knight earned the win throwing the complete game shutout. She tallied 10 strikeouts.

The Cavaliers were outhit 12-3 in game two with Alison Pittman, Stephanie Harris and Hawkins each recording singles.

Maryland and Virginia are scheduled to close the series at 12 p.m. Sunday at The Park.
