Top-Ranked Cavaliers Win 7-0 at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia men’s tennis team concluded its 11-match road trip Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over No. 46 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (20-0, 5-0 ACC) reach the 20-win plateau for the ninth consecutive season with the win, while the Seminoles fall to 6-10 overall (1-4 ACC). The victory extended Virginia’s ACC-record win streak to 68 consecutive victories over conference competition.
In doubles, the Cavaliers swept all three matches to take a 1-0 lead. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) gave UVa an early edge with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Jordan Kelly-Houston and Blake Davis. Virginia won the other two matches in tiebreakers, as Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) topped Anderson Reed and Andres Bucaro 9-8(3) at No. 2 and the team of Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) won 9-8(5) over Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith at No. 1.
In singles, Virginia won all six first sets and won five of those matches in straight sets. Domijan cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Clint Bowles at No. 2. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Bucaro. The victory was clinched by Jenkins at No. 3, who topped Davis 6-3, 6-1. Shabaz added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Mirzadeh and Courntey won 7-6(9), 6-1 at No. 4 over Smith. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) closed out the match with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Kelly-Houston.
The Cavaliers, who haven’t played at home since Feb. 11, will host a pair of ACC rivals next weekend. They play No. 9 Duke on Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 15 North Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.
