Charlottesville, VA – The sixth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team plays in the 23rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 15-17 in Greensboro, N.C. at the historic Sedgefield Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition per day at the par-71, 6,185-yard course that once hosted the Greater Greensboro Open and is the current site of the PGA’s Wyndham Championship (Aug. 18-21). It is also the site of the founding of the conference. This marks the third consecutive year the ACC Championships have been held at Sedgefield Country Club.

The Cavaliers are paired with Wake Forest and Duke during Friday’s opening round and tee off starting at 10:10 a.m.

Duke has dominated the championship winning the title every year except twice since 1996. The Blue Devils own a total of 16 ACC titles while Wake Forest has claimed five and North Carolina one. The Demon Deacons have won back-to-back titles. In 2009 Wake Forest ran away with the championship, winning by 24 strokes at 869. Virginia was fifth overall at 907. Last year the Deacons shot 869 and beat runner up Virginia by four strokes. UVa’s Calle Nielson and Brittany Altomare tied for second at 1-under 212. Michelle Shin of Wake Forest was the individual champion at 211.

Virginia’s lineup will include Altomare, Nielson, Nicole Agnello, Portland Rosen and Eleana Collins. Altomare leads UVa with a 72.96 stroke average while Nielson is second at 74.25.

This year’s tournament includes five teams ranked in Golfstat’s top-30. In addition to the No. 6 Cavaliers, Duke is No. 5, Wake Forest is No. 16, North Carolina is No. 23 and Florida State is No. 29.

Virginia has placed second three times in the seven years the Cavaliers have competed in the championship. UVa was the runner-up in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Altomare and Nielson’s second place showing in 2010 matched Leah Wigger’s runner-up finish in 2006 as the best in UVa’s history.
