No. 2 Virginia Rowing Hosts Five Ranked Teams at Lake Monticello This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The second-ranked Virginia rowing team will compete against No. 3 Southern California, No. 8 Michigan State and No. 17 UCLA this weekend at Lake Monticello. The Cavaliers take on the Spartans on Friday (April 15) beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday (April 16) afternoon competition (6 p.m.) vs. UCLA. On Sunday (April 17), Virginia takes on third-ranked USC beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Additionally, No. 13 Clemson and No. 18 Texas are competing at Lake Monticello, with Virginia facing the Longhorns in Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four races and Clemson in Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Four races. A complete schedule for the six teams competing is listed below.

Virginia is ranked No. 2 in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, released on Wednesday (April 13).
The Cavaliers were last in action on April 3, winning each of their races against Michigan and Ohio State.
For the 2011 spring season, UVa’s Varsity Eight is 2-2 with wins over the Wolverines and Buckeyes and second-place finishes to California and Stanford.
UVa’s Second Varsity Eight is undefeated this season and has an ACC Crew of the Week nod to its name.
In the Varsity Four, the Cavaliers are 3-1 this season with wins over Stanford, Ohio State and Michigan.
No. 8 Michigan State and Virginia met in a scrimmage earlier this season, but no times or results were official. The Spartans’ 2010 Varsity Eight won the petite final and the team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the NCAA Championships.
The 17th-ranked Bruins finished 12th at last year’s NCAA Championships and the UCLA Varsity Eight had a third-place finish in the petite final.
Southern California is ranked No. 3 in the CRCA poll, one spot behind the Cavaliers. USC is coming off two title wins at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Trojans finished eighth as a team at last year’s NCAA Championships and had a sixth-place finish in the grand final of the Varsity Eight.
Following this weekend’s regatta at Lake Monticello, Virginia travels to the 2011 ACC Championships, held on Clemson’s Lake Hartwell, on Saturday, April 23.
