DURHAM, N.C. – Led by junior Tara Karin, six Cavaliers scored on the opening day of the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium. Karin earned her second All-ACC honor in the javelin, finishing third with a throw of 148′ 10″.

Junior Anna Corrigan and freshman Katherine Walker also scored on the women’s side, both earning top-eight finishes in the 10,000 meters. Corrigan finished fifth in 34:45.80, while Walker crossed in 35:31.42.

On the men’s side, junior Andy Fahringer earned a fourth-place finish in the javelin, throwing 209′ 2″. Fahringer also scored in the discus, earning eighth place with a mark of 152′ 11″.

Junior Vincenzo Chiariello finished seventh in the discus, heaving 153′ 8″.

Following the first day of competition, the Cavalier women sit third with 15 points. Duke leads the field with 31 points, while Clemson is second with 21.

On the men’s side, Virginia is sixth with eight points. Duke is currently in first with 34 points, while NC State is second with 23 points. Florida State rounds out the top three with 19 points.

Virginia will be back in action tomorrow, with multi-events beginning at 10 a.m. The final day of competition is scheduled for Saturday.
