The Cavaliers are ranked No. 5 in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, released Wednesday. The other ACC team that is ranked is Clemson, as the Tigers check in at No. 14.

Virginia has won 10 of the 11 ACC Championships dating back to 2000. After a string of nine-consecutive conference crowns (a Virginia school record) from 2000-08, UVa had a second-place team finish in 2009. Last season the ‘Hoos got ACC Championship No. 10 and won every race en route to the team title.

Virginia’s Varsity Eight has a 4-3 record this season. The Varsity Eight came back strong with four consecutive wins after placing second to both No. 4 Stanford and No. 3 California at the start of the season. Last weekend at the Cavaliers’ Lake Monticello the Varsity Eight faltered to No. 3 USC but defeated No. 8 Michigan State and No. 17 UCLA.

The Cavaliers’ Second Varsity Eight holds a 6-1 record for the 2011 season, including victories over No. 3 USC and No. 4 Stanford. The squad’s only setback came last weekend with a second-place finish to No. 8 Michigan State at Virginia’s Lake Monticello. UVa’s Second Varsity Eight has been named the ACC Crew of the Week twice this season.

Virginia’s Varsity Four is 5-2 this season, defeating No. 4 Stanford to open the season. Both of the Varsity Four’s losses came to opponents ranked No. 3 at the time – California and USC.

Following Saturday’s races, the conference awards will be announced including ACC Crew of the Year, ACC Coach of the Year and the All-ACC team.
