PRINCETON, N.J. – Racing against No. 1 Princeton on the Tigers’ home course, No. 19 Tennessee and Columbia, the fifth-ranked Virginia rowing team won two races on Saturday (April 30) on Lake Carnegie. The Cavaliers’ Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four won those races, while the top-ranked Tigers claimed victories in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight.

Virginia’s Varsity Four of coxswain Sarah Jordan, Ruth Retzinger, Kaity McCullough, Chelsea Simpson and Susanne Grainger won with a time of 8:01.5, defeating Princeton (8:12.5), Tennessee (8:17.0) and Columbia (8:29.7). It was UVa’s Varsity Four’s seventh victory of the season.

Princeton claimed the Varsity Eight race with a time of 6:51.1, followed by UVa (7:03.4), Columbia (7:05.4) and Tennessee (7:08.1). UVa’s Varsity Eight was coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Kristine O’Brien, Christine Roper, Fiona Schlesinger, Martha Kuzzy, Keziah Beall, Carli Goldberg, Claudia Blandford and Taylor Levine.

Princeton, ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, remained undefeated in the Varsity Eight on the season.

The Tigers also won the Second Varsity Eight, posting a time of 7:06.0. Virginia (coxswain Molly Frear, MacKenzie Leahy, Lauren Shook, Carolyn Glandorf, Sarah Borchelt, Morgan Joseph, Brandy Herald, Cara Linnenkohl, Marelle Myers) finished in second place with a time of 7:09.0. Tennessee was third (7:35.0), followed by Columbia (7:42.5).

UVa’s boats finished first (8:00.6) and second (8:06.3) in the Second Varsity Four. Tennessee was third (8:11.4), followed by Columbia (8:26.1) and Princeton (8:34.7).

Princeton’s time of 7:17.6 in the Third Varsity Eight was good for first place, followed by Virginia (7:27.6) and Columbia (8:06.8).

Virginia is back in action on Sunday, May 15, against No. 20 Notre Dame and Louisville in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
