CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -The Virginia softball team (22-29, 5-14 ACC) topped NC State 1-0 Sunday in the final game of conference play at Dail Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Marcy Bowdren knocked in teammate Taylor Williams in the sixth inning for the game’s only run.

The Cavaliers strung together three hits in the inning. Williams got things started with a bunt single to third. Alison Pittman followed with another bunt that was ruled a fielder’s choice as Williams was called safe at second. Erica Cipolloni then hit a single to left to load the bases.

With two outs, Bowdren stepped up to the plate and battled a 2-2 count and fouled off several pitches before putting the ball on the ground to deep short. She beat out the throw to first as Williams came in to score the go-ahead run.

The Wolfpack put two runners on in the top of the seventh after two Virginia errors, but stranded them on base as Landon Warren lined out to Bowdren at second to end the game.

Virginia outhit NC State 6-3 for the contest. Williams finished with two singles and Bowdren also notched a double in addition to her RBI single. Stephanie Harris also singled.

Sophomore Melanie Mitchell earned the win with the complete game shutout. She finished with three strikeouts.

NC State’s Kayla Cox took the loss. She tallied 10 strikeouts and allowed one walk. The Wolfpack dropped to 26-22 and 7-12 in conference play.

Virginia concludes regular season play Tuesday with a make-up doubleheader at Liberty. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
