Hultzen Named First-Team Academic All-District

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia pitcher/first baseman Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) has earned Capital One First-Team Academic All-District honors for the second straight year, as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hultzen is now eligible to earn Academic All-America honors; last year Hultzen claimed Second-Team Academic All-America laurels. A history major, Hultzen owns a 3.37 grade-point average.

Hultzen also was named to the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player Award on Friday. The award is presented by the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Hultzen is one of 25 players nationally on the list. The award recognizes a player who makes an impact both on the mound and at the plate.

Hultzen is 9-1 with an ACC-low 1.19 ERA this season. In 75.2 innings he has allowed 50 hits and 12 walks while striking out 112. Batters are hitting just .187 against him.

The two-time All-American holds the Virginia career records for wins (29) and strikeouts (342). He also ranks 10th in ACC history in strikeouts. He stands second in UVa history in career win percentage (.907) and ERA (2.14), fifth in games started (43) and eighth in innings pitched (277.1). This season he leads the ACC in strikeouts (112), which is second nationally, and also is tied for third in NCAA Division I with nine wins.

He also is batting .333 this year with a home run, seven doubles and 28 RBI.

Hultzen was named Baseball America’s Midseason Player of the Year this year and also was tabbed a Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Preseason First-Team All-American. He twice this season has been named Collegiate Baseball’s National Player of the Week and was tabbed as the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week on March 1.

Virginia returns to action May 13-15 with a home series against No. 14 Miami.
