Auburn, WA – Needing a top-eight finish to advance to the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive season, the No. 6 Virginia women’s golf team is in third place heading into Saturday’s final round of the NCAA West Regional. The Cavaliers shot 13-over 301 Friday at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. for a 36-hole total of 15-over 591.

Top-ranked USC leads the 24-team field at 4-under 572 while No. 13 Tennessee is second at 3-over 579. Texas A&M and Oregon are tied for eighth-place at 603.

Virginia was led Friday by the 2-over 74s posted by senior Calle Nielson and sophomore Nicole Agnello. Nielson, the 2010 West Regional medalist, is tied for 11th place at 2-over 146 for the tournament. Agnello matched Nielson’s score thanks to a solid finish that saw her shoot 2-under over her final 12 holes. She started out going 4-over for her first six holes. Agnello moved up to 63rd place after beginning the day in 104th position following an opening round of 82.

Senior Joy Kim shot 4-over 76 and is in 19th place at 148. Freshman Portland Rosen is one shot behind her in 25th position. Rosen carded a 77 during the second round.

Brittany Altomare also struggled early in her round, shooting 7-over through the first seven holes before settling down to finish her final 11 holes at even par. She is in 45th place at 153.

Tennessee’s Erica Popson shot 3-under 69 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round at 7-under 137. USC’s Lizette Salas is in second place at 140.

Playing with USC and Tennessee, the Cavaliers will tee off starting at 9:06 a.m. (PT) during Saturday’s final round.
