PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Maureen Laffan led the Virginia track and field team on the second day of competition at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, breaking the all-time program record in the hammer throw by over four feet. Laffan threw a personal-best 191′ 0″ to finish third overall and better Eliese Mitchell’s 2003 school record mark of 186′ 10″.

In preliminary events, Virginia advanced to tomorrow’s finals in four events.

Senior All-American Ayla Smith finished with the top preliminary time in the 400m hurdles – a mark of 58.77 – to advance to tomorrow’s finals. Senior All-American Adams Abdulrazaaq also advanced to the finals in a hurdles event and will take the second-best 110m hurdles time into tomorrow’s finals, 14.03.

In the 200m dash, sophomore Danielle Williams qualified for the finals, finishing eighth in 24.29.

Virginia’s 4x100m relay team of seniors Kisha Garrick and Kristine Chapman, junior Meagan Gillespie and Williams finished fourth in 46.28 and will race again tomorrow.

In today’s finals, junior Tara Karin finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 147′ 11″, while junior Vincenzo Chiariello took eighth in the hammer throw. Chiariello threw 186′ 5″.

Virginia’s distance runners will compete tonight at the Carolina Relays. Events are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
