OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The fifth-ranked Virginia rowing team finished its regular season in impressive fashion on Sunday (May 15), winning every race it competed in en route to the Oak Ridge Invitational title. The Cavaliers won the grand finals of the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Open Four and Third Varsity Eight at Lake Melton.

Virginia’s Varsity Eight (coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Kristine O’Brien, Christine Roper, Fiona Schlesinger, Martha Kuzzy, Keziah Beall, Sarah Borchelt, Claudia Blandford, Carli Goldberg) won the grand final over second-place Clemson with a time of 6:26.00. The Tigers finished in 6:31.86. The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight had won its heat earlier in the day with a time of 6:35.20.

UVa’s Second Varsity Eight (coxswain Molly Frear, MacKenzie Leahy, Lauren Shook, Carolyn Glandorf, Jenny Shultis, Morgan Joseph, Elle Murray, Cara Linnenkohl, Marelle Myers) won its grand final with a time of 6:39.20, also over second-place Clemson (6:42.36). The Cavaliers’ Second Varsity Eight won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:50.20.

In the Varsity Four, UVa (coxswain Sarah Jordan, Ruth Retzinger, Hunter Terry, Chelsea Simpson, Kaity McCullough) won with a time of 7:12.20. Second-place went to Notre Dame (7:22.52). The Varsity Four won its heat with a morning time of 7:25.30.

In the Open Four, Virginia’s crew of coxswain Miriam Kaplan, Caroline Sweeny, Susanne Grainger, Katie Walker and Betsy Nilan won the grand final with a time of 7:25.30, followed by Clemson (7:36.79). Third-place went to the Virginia crew of coxswain Brittany Wengel, Mary Nilan, Susie Chalker, Katherine Stewart and Elspeth Missel.

Virginia’s Third Varsity Eight (coxswain Sarah Shanfield, Allison Mayberry, Lieve Pitts, Ann Reid, Brandy Herald, Emily Pik, Liza Tullis, Erin Metcalf and Colleen Bauk) won its race with a time of 6:50.40. Second place went to Clemson with a time of 7:04.67.

The field for the 2011 NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday (May 17) at 5 p.m. The selection show can be viewed on NCAA.com.
