Smith Wins ECAC Title in 400m Hurdles

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior All-American Ayla Smith won her second ECAC title in the 400m hurdles Sunday afternoon at the 2011 ECAC/IC4A Championships. The 2008 champion in the event, Smith won this year’s competition with a personal-best time of 57.42. That mark ranks third on Virginia’s all-time program records and is 14th in the NCAA this year.

The Cavaliers also received runner-up performances from senior All-American Adams Abdulrazaaq in the 110m hurdles and sophomore Danielle Williams in the 200m dash. Abdulrazaaq crossed in a time of 13.89, while Williams earned a personal-best finish of 24.09.

Williams also anchored Virginia’s 4x100m relay team to a third-place finish. The quartet of senior Kisha Garrick, senior Kristina Chapman, junior Meagan Gillespie and Williams combined to earn a time of 46.05.

In field events, sophomore Pearl Bickersteth finished third in the high jump, clearing 5′ 8″, while freshman Emily Kianka took fifth with a mark of 5′ 6″.

Junior Andy Fahringer took fourth in the javelin with a throw of 222′ 5″, sophomore Emily Vannoy finished fourth in the shot put (49′ 4.25″) and sophomore Dallas Rose was eighth in the triple jump, leaping 40′ 7″.

As a team, the women finished third overall with 61.5 points. Duke won the team title with 73.75 points and Connecticut finished second with 65. On the men’s side, Virginia finished 13th with 24 points. Duke claimed the men’s title with 74.5 points, while George Mason was second with 61 and Albany was third with 55 points. Liberty finished eighth with 28 points, just four points more than the Cavaliers.

Virginia will take next weekend off before heading to the 2011 NCAA East Preliminary Round at Indiana University on May 26-28. Qualifiers for the championship will be announced on Thursday, May 19.
