CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia rowing recently announced its 2011 awards at its annual team banquet. Junior Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) shared the Coach’s Award for Excellence.

Kuzzy, a tri-captain, has rowed with the Varsity Eight that has won seven races this spring including the ACC Championship. In April, she was selected to attend the USRowing Women’s Under 23 National Team Selection Camp. Kuzzy was named the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year.

O’Brien, the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year, has also rowed with the Varsity Eight that has won seven races this spring including the ACC Championship. Additionally she was selected to attend the USRowing Women’s Under 23 National Team Selection Camp.

Sharing the Magruder Dent Oarsmanship Award was junior Jenny Shultis (Lexington, Va.) and junior MacKenzie Leahy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Both have rowed with the Second Varsity Eight this season, including the crew’s 2011 ACC Championship.

The Thomas Temple Allan Rookie of the Year Award went to Emily Pik (Darien, Conn.). Most recently, Pik was in the Third Varsity Eight that won the grand final at the Oak Ridge Invitational (May 15).

Junior Sarah Borchelt (Sterling, Mass.) was named the recipient of the Susan Swezey Teamwork Award. Borchelt, a tri-captain, recently returned from injury to row with the Varsity Eight in its grand final victory at the Oak Ridge Invitational. Borchelt was a 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete and rowed with the Second Varsity Eight that finished fourth at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

Also honored were four-year rowers Colleen Bauk (Leonardtown, Md.), Claudia Blandford (Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada), Susie Chalker (Mercer Island, Wash.), Lieve Pitts (Charlottesville, Va.), Christine Roper (Reading, St. James, Jamaica), Lauren Shook (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Caroline Sweeny (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.).

The Cavaliers await the 2011 NCAA Championship announcement, being made Tuesday (May 17) at 5 p.m. The selection show can be viewed at NCAA.com.
