Women's Tennis Falls to UCLA 4-1 in NCAA Round of 16

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 11 Virginia women’s tennis team had its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to No. 6 UCLA in a NCAA Tournament round of 16 match on Friday at the Taube South Courts. The Cavaliers conclude the season with a 20-8 record, the first 20-win season in program history, while the Bruins advance to meet Duke in the quarterfinals.

“I am really, really proud of this team,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “Obviously, congrats to UCLA for the getting the win, but both teams showed incredible fight and heart. It was a great match. We were only a few points in a couple of games away from being in position to get a 4-3 win. I was really impressed with how we composed ourselves after doubles and fought so much in singles.”

UCLA took the early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. Maya Johannson and Pamela Montez downed Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Caryssa Peretz (Cheery Hill, N.J.) 8-1 at the No. 3 position. Noelle Hickey and McCall Jones clinched the point with their 8-2 win at No. 2 over Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.).

In singles, the Bruins doubled their lead when Johannson defeated Fuccillo in straight sets at the No. 6 position. Virginia cut the advantage in half as Fraser downed Hickey 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 to make the score 2-1. Courtney Dolehide answered with a three-set win at No. 5 over Peretz to give the Bruins a 3-1 edge before McCall Jones defeated Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax tation, Va.) 6-4, 7-6(1) at the top spot to clinch the four-hour match.

“It was a great season,” said Guilbeau. “I know there is more good to come, starting on this trip with the individual championships next week. It was great for them to get to experience this stage and this environment and I know it will be something we can build upon in the future.”

The Cavaliers will have four individuals compete in the NCAA individual championships, beginning on Wednesday. Fraser and Hardenbergh will compete in the 64-player singles championship and Fraser/Tomljanovic and Hardenbergh/Vierra will compete in the 32-team doubles championship.
