CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team will head to Bloomington, Ind., for the 2011 NCAA East Preliminary Round Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28. The event will be streamed live online, with coverage beginning on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday at 6 p.m. There will also be live results available. The Cavaliers will compete the three days at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex to be among the final 12 individual competitors that will advance to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11.

Junior Maureen Laffan will open competition for the Cavaliers on Thursday, competing in the qualifying round of the hammer throw at 11 a.m. Junior Andy Fahringer will also compete on the opening day, throwing the javelin at noon, while senior Greg Nelson will high jump at 1 p.m.

Events on the E.C. Billy Hayes Track also begin Thursday with seniors Kristina Chapman and Ayla Smith competing in the first round of the 400m hurdles at 3:30 p.m., with the quarterfinal round of the hurdles being scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.

Junior Morgane Gay will follow the hurdlers with the first round of the women’s 1500m run at 4:30 p.m., before senior John Minen and sophomore Brett Johnson compete on the men’s side at 5 p.m. The 1500m quarterfinals are set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Lyndsay Harper will toe the line for the first round of the 800m at 7:30 p.m., followed by junior Lance Roller, sophomore Robby Andrews and freshman Anthony Kostelac in the men’s section at 8 p.m. Quarterfinal races for the 800m will raced at 6:30 p.m., on Friday.

Junior Anna Corrigan and freshman Chris Foley will round out competition on the opening day, each racing the semifinal of the 10,000m. Corrigan will run at 8:30 p.m., while Foley will compete at 9:15 p.m.

On Friday, junior Vincenzo Chiariello will open competition with the men’s hammer throw qualifying round at 11 a.m. Junior Tara Karin will compete in the javelin at noon, before sophomore Emily Vannoy throws the shot put and sophomore Pearl Bickersteth competes in the high jump at 1 p.m.

Senior Adams Abdulrazaaq will open events on the track with the first round of the 110m hurdles at 5 p.m. The quarterfinal rounds is set for Saturday at 7:20 p.m.

Seniors Stephanie Garcia and Andrew Mearns, junior Andrew Revelle and freshman Colin Mearns will wrap up events on Friday with the quarterfinals of the 3000m steeplechase. Garcia will run at 8:30 p.m., while the men’s race will begin at 9:10 p.m.

Junior Erin Wykoff will begin competition on Saturday – final day of the preliminary round, throwing the discus at 11 a.m.

The top-12 finalists in each of the individual events will advance to Des Moines and join the top-12 finalists from the NCAA West Preliminary Round. These 24 competitors will create the field for the semifinals and finals of the NCAA Championships.
