Hardenbergh Advances in NCAA Singles Championship

STANFORD, Calif. – Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship with a first round win on Wednesday at the Taube Tennis Center. With the victory, she becomes the first Cavalier women’s player to win a match at the event.

Hardenbergh defeated Alex Cercone of Florida in the first round, 6-2, 7-6(6). She used a pair of breaks to win the first set 6-2. In the second set, she fell behind 4-2 before winning four of the next five games to serve for the match at 6-5. However, Cercone broke back to force the second set tiebreaker. Cercone had a 3-1 lead early in the breaker, and had a set point at 6-5, but Hardenbergh won the final three points to clinch her victory. She will play Connie Hsu of Penn in the second round, who upset fifth-seeded Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame in the first round.

Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) fell in her NCAA Singles Championship debut to sixth-seeded Allie Will of Florida, 6-3, 6-0.

In addition to the second round of singles, the first round of doubles will be on Thursday. The Cavalier teams of Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.), and Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) will be in action.
