Corrigan and Smith Named to Academic All-District Teams

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Anna Corrigan (Burke, Va.) and senior Ayla Smith (Winchester, Va.) have been named to the 2010-11 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country teams, as announced today by the organization. Corrigan was named to the first team, while Smith was a second-team selection.
With the first-team nod, Corrigan is now eligible to earn Academic All-America honors. Majoring in systems engineering with a minor in civil engineering, the distance runner has a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average.
On the track, Corrigan was an NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifier in the 10,000m this spring, narrowly missing NCAAs with a 15th-place finish in a personal-best time of 33:58.46. That time ranks eighth in UVa’s all-time program records. She also scored in two events at both the indoor and outdoor ACC Championships and finished 59th at the ACC Cross Country Championships. During indoor, Corrigan finished seventh at ACCs in the 5000m and eighth in the 3000m. She followed that up outdoors with a fifth-place finish in the 10k and an eighth-place finish in the 5000m.
Smith completed her master’s degree in kinesiology-exercise physiology from the Curry School of Education this spring with a 3.56 GPA. She earned a bachelor of science in the same program in the spring of 2010.
A sprinter and hurdler, Smith earned her first All-America honor this indoor season, running the 400m leg of the Cavaliers’ distance medley relay team that finished third at the NCAA Championships. She followed that up during the outdoor season by becoming the third Cavalier to ever advance to the NCAA Championships in the 400m hurdles. The two-time ECAC Champion and four-time ACC finalist in the 400m hurdles, Smith owns Virginia’s school records in the 60m hurdles, 100m hurdles, indoor DMR and outdoor DMR. She also ranks in the top-three in UVa’s pentathlon records and owns the ACC meet record in the pentathlon 60m hurdles.
Virginia will send nine competitors to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, next week. Events are scheduled to run June 8-11.
