EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Colin Mearns narrowly missed advancing to the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships on Saturday, finishing third in the junior section of the 3000m steeplechase at the 2011 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Mearns completed the race in a time of 9:07.33, while Georgetown’s Maximillian Darrah won the event in 8:59.69.

Freshman Kathleen Stevens also competed today, racing for the first time in a Cavalier uniform. Stevens finished fifth in the finals of the 3000m with a time of 9:42.30.

In the finals of the junior 800m, freshman Vanessa Fabrizio finished eighth with a time of 2:13.86.

Virginia will conclude competition at the USA Championships tomorrow with senior All-American Stephanie Garcia racing in the steeplechase (4:45 p.m. ET) and sophomore NCAA Champion Robby Andrews competing in the 800m (5:27 p.m. ET). The top-three finishers in each event will advance to the 2011 IAAF World Championships and represent Team USA in Daegu, South Korea on Aug. 27-Sept. 4.
