Seven Cavaliers Named to All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track and Field Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia track and field team has placed seven Cavaliers on the All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track and Field Teams, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. Senior All-Americans Stephanie Garcia, Lyndsay Harper and Ayla Smith, in addition to junior All-American Morgane Gay, classmate Anna Corrigan and sophomore Dallas Rose have been named to the women’s squad, while junior Andrew Revelle was honored on the men’s side.

Corrigan, a 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-District III first-team honoree, was an NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifier in the 10,000m for the Cavaliers this spring, narrowly missing NCAAs with a 15th-place finish. Corrigan’s personal-best time of 33:58.64 from the race ranks eighth in UVa’s all-time program records. At the ACC Outdoor Championships, the Burke, Va., native scored in two events, finishing fifth in the 10k and eighth in the 5k.

Garcia wrapped up her career as the best steeplechaser in program history. The South Riding, Va., native holds the all-time ACC record and UVa’s school record in the event (9:47.29), in addition to the ACC meet record and Duke’s Wallace Wade Facility record (9:55.10). The two-time All-American became the highest individual finisher on the track for UVa’s women’s program at NCAAs this year, as she finished runner-up in the steeplechase with a time of 9:47.29. A four-time NCAA qualifier in the event, Garcia also won two ACC steeplechase titles throughout her career.

Gay, a native of Bethesda, Md., earned her second All-America honor in the 1500m this year, finishing seventh at NCAAs in 4:17.40. Gay also earned All-ACC honors in the event, finishing third at the conference meet.

Harper earned her first All-America honor in the 800m this year, picking up second-team accolades in her first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance. She also teamed with Garcia, Gay and Smith at the Penn Relays to finish third in the Championship of America section of the distance medley relay. The quartet combined for a time of 10:57.13 to shatter UVa’s all-time program record in the event, set at 11:19.39 in 1982 by All-Americans Lisa Welch, Lesley Welch, Lisa Garrett and Jill Haworth.

Revelle, from Clarksville, Md., scored at the ACC Championships for the second-straight year in the steeplechase. The distance runner finished seventh in 9:02.58 and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Rose scored for the Cavaliers at ACCs in the triple jump, leaping a personal-best 40′ 4.25″ to finish eighth overall. The Pearland, Texas, native also finished eighth at the ECAC Championships, while she earned a season-best mark of 40′ 7.5″ at the Spec Towns Invitational.

Smith, a four-time All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track and Field Team honoree, wraps up her career as the best hurdler in Cavalier history. A 2011 second-team All-American in the 400m hurdles, the Winchester, Va., native, was a four-time ACC finalist and two-time ECAC Champion in the event. A CoSIDA Academic All-District III second-team honoree this year, Smith leaves UVa as the school record holder in each of the hurdle events: 100m hurdles (13.51) and 400m hurdles (56.54) outdoors and the 60m hurdles indoors (8.39).

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his/her academic career.
