CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia’s Sarah Borchelt has been named the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and five Cavaliers are members of the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team, the conference announced Wednesday (June 29).

In addition to Borchelt, Claudia Blandford, Molly Frear, Martha Kuzzy and Taylor Levine earned a spot on the team.

Borchelt, a junior from Sterling, Mass., is a nursing major and a member of UVa’s Varsity Eight that finished seventh at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif. Borchelt has been named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete for two-consecutive years (2010 and 2011). Prior to the 2011 season, Borchelt was named a tri-captain.

This is Borchelt’s second-consecutive selection to the All-ACC Academic Rowing team. She is the second-consecutive Cavalier to be named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year after Jennifer Cromwell earned the honor in 2010.

Blandford (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) was named to the CRCA All-South Region second team in 2011 after rowing with the Varsity Eight for the spring season. A tri-captain in 2011, Blandford also earned All-ACC honors in 2011 after Virginia won its 11th ACC Championship and the Varsity Eight rowed to a conference title. Blandford, a senior, earned her degree in mechanical engineering.

Frear (Wilton, Conn.) was the coxswain for Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight in 2011. That crew finished fifth at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Frear, a junior Italian major, coxed the Second Varsity Eight to an ACC title, helping the Cavaliers capture the conference crown.

Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), a junior studio art major, was a tri-captain in 2011 and rowed with the Varsity Eight that finished seventh at the national championship regatta. Kuzzy was named to the CRCA All-South Region first team and the All-ACC team in 2011.

Levine (Margate, N.J.), a sophomore, rowed with the Varsity Eight that won the 2011 ACC title and the Second Varsity Eight that finished fifth at NCAAs. She has not declared a major.

To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.
