Bethpage, N.Y. – Virginia junior tight end Colter Phillips (6-6, 250) has been named to the 2011 John Mackey Award preseason watch list released by the Nassau County Sports Commission. Given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.

Phillips appeared in all 12 games in 2010, starting 10 times. He recorded 18 receptions for 155 yards. He scored his first career touchdown on a 17-yard pass against VMI. Phillips had a career-high four catches for 31 yards at Boston College. He enters his junior season with 23 career receptions totaling 189 yards and has scored three touchdowns.

The 2011 John Mackey winner will be presented live at the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on December 8, 2011 at 6pm EST on ESPNU.

NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey was considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.

Former Cavalier Heath Miller won the award in 2004.
