Virginia Wins Fourth Consecutive VaSID All-Sports Championship

NORFOLK, Va.– The University of Virginia won 66.0 percent of its intercollegiate athletics contests in 2010-11 to win the 33rd annual Virginia Sports Information Directors’ Association Division I All-Sports Championship. It is the 13th overall title for the Cavaliers, their fourth consecutive championship and their sixth in the last eight years.
James Madison University was second overall at 64.5 percent followed by Liberty University at 57.8 percent. Virginia won 74.2 percent of its men’s contests followed by James Madison at 63.6 percent. On the women’s side James Madison won 65.0 percent of its contests followed by Virginia at 57.8 percent.
The Cavaliers won two team national championships and two individual national titles along with five Atlantic Coast Conference championships in 2010-11. Virginia won the NCAA title in men’s lacrosse and its fourth consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championship in men’s tennis.
Virginia swimmer Matt McLean won the 500 yard freestyle at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and runner Robby Andrews won the 800 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The All-Sports Championship began in 1978-79 and includes winning percentages of only those sports with NCAA sponsored championships. Virginia leads with 13 overall titles, followed by Old Dominion University with 12, James Madison with three, Hampton University with two, and one crown each for George Mason University, the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University.
