Barrington, RI – Former Virginia standout Calle Nielson advanced to the match play portion of the 2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship today at the Rhode Island Country Club. She followed up Monday’s opening round score of 74 with a 73 today for a 36-hole total of 2-over 147 to tie for 55th in the stroke play portion of the tournament. The top 64 players move on to match play that begins Wednesday.

Current UVa junior Brittany Altomare was 80th overall in stroke play at 4-over 151 and did not advance to match play.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur runs through Sunday. The event dates back to 1895 and marks the beginning of women’s competitive golf in this country. Along with the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open, the Women’s Amateur was one of the USGA’s first three championships.
